Pride & Prejudice, by Jane Austen
Runners up: Atonement and Possession
(I would have gone with Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca, but I still have yet to read that book!! I'm awful!!)

Now, if you do a search for Pride & Prejudice on IMDB, you'll come up with 15 or so titles, some of which are related to the "...and Zombies" franchise, most of which are tv mini-series, and one of which is a video game titles "Little Dogs on the Prairie: Pride, Prejudice and Fudge." Anyone else intrigued, yet terrified?
Anyway, you've got your miniseries everyone knows from 1995 (Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle) and you've got the more recent Joe Wright misfire from 2005 (Keira Knightley, Matthew MacFadyen - I never realized they both had alliterative names!)

| Whoever picked these costumes should have been fired. The pants are wrong the dress is wrong. the waistcoat is wrong. the sleeves are wrong. *GAH* |
The first film*, though, was in 1940 with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. And it's pretty terrible. The costumes are from the wrong period, the architecture is from the wrong period, Garson is actually 3 years older than Olivier, and you can tell.... I mean it's just...wrong. But it's fun to watch.
But I'd like to point out two adaptations that get less notice, or at least that which show up at the very bottom of that list.

| I could take or leave Jemima Rooper, but the rest of the cast is brilliant. |

*For the record, apparently there was a made for tv version in 1938, prior to the film in 1940... they had television in 1938? Who? Who had television? Maybe the Prime Minister. Anyway, it stars no one I've heard of, including someone called Curigwen Lewis (remind me to leave Curigwen off of my future baby names list). Also, there's an actor named John Whiting whose role(s) are listed as "Servant, Organ Grinder, Apothecary"... I'm not sure what the latter two have to do with Jane Austen, but I'm awfully curious. Also, the character list is awfully short: Lizzy, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bennet, Jane, Lady Catherine, Sir William Lucas, Wickham, the organ grinder/apothecary, Denny, and another servant. To be honest, I'm not sure how they assembled anything like the plot with that collection of characters! I'm sure it's just missing things.... but if they remembered the organ grinder, how could they forget everyone else???

um, they totes meant trashy romance novel. HDU SKIMP ON THE TRASH!
ReplyDeleteP&P was another strong contender for favorite book turned into a movie for me. The 1995 BBC miniseries is my favorite adaptation and I watch it pretty regularly. I am also a fan of the Bollywood version with Aishwarya Rai and Naveen Andrews :D It's fun and b/c it's Bollywood and present day, I accept the differences in the storyline more readily than I would in a straight adaptation.
I hate the 2005 adaptation with Keira Knightley >:[ The only thing I truly love about that adaptation is the score, which is one of my favorite scores. But that's it. I poo poo on the rest of it!
Hahaha! I generally don't read trashy romance novels. The closest I really get to them is Abigail Reynolds' Pride & Prejudice variations. My best friend, who was also my roommate in college for 3 years, has quite the trashy romance collection...I leave that stuff to her!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you assertion that the differences are more acceptable given the Bollywood gimmick...I have to say that the songs definitely make it worth anyone's while. No Life Without Wife? Brilliant. BRILL-I-ANT.
I don't love the 2005 adaptation. I have to say I was biased because of the 1995 adaptation, and also because I read that Matthew MacFadyen didn't read the book. That's about a thousand points from Gryffindor, thank you very much. But the score truly won me over. Dario Marianelli is an amaaazing composer. He also did the score for Atonement, which I am completely in love with. I listen to it on the train all the time. Apparently he also did the score for this year's adaptation of Jane Eyre...which I don't want to see...but I definitely want to hear the music!
